History of the Lottery

Anyone who has played the lottery has probably wondered more than once when, where and how the lottery was invented?

When first lottery was held in China in 200 BC, the rules of the game were very similar to today's Keno. The money collected used to finance, among others: the defense of China, construction of port defense and the construction of canals. It is by lottery that the Great Wall of China was constructed, whose purpose was to protect the Ming Dynasty from Mongol invasions.

The first known European lotteries were held during the Roman Empire, mainly as an amusement at dinner parties.

The first recorded lotteries to offer tickets for sale with prizes in the form of money were held in the Low Countries in the 15th century.

In the sixteenth century Italy, France and England began to organize lotteries. In 1567 Queen Elizabeth I of England held a lottery in which close to 400.000 tickets were sold.

Key events in the history of the Lottery

  • 1760s – Benjamin Franklin organized a lottery to raise money to purchase cannon for the defense of Philadelphia. Several of these lotteries offered prizes in the form of "Pieces of Eight." George Washington's Mountain Road Lottery in 1768 was unsuccessful. However, these rare lottery tickets bearing George Washington's signature have become collectors' items which sold for about $15,000 in 2007.John Hancock used lottery funds to rebuild historic Faneuil hall in Boston. George Washington use lottery money to finance the construction of roads, which opened the western expansion of Virginia.
  • 1726 - The Netherlands organized a lottery, which operates to this day.
  • 1753 - England held a lottery to finance the British Museum.
  • 1763 - In December held the first El Gordo lottery.
  • 1776 – France organized lotteries to fund its military school and later for the cadet academy at Saint-Cyr. With the advent of this main lottery, other lotteries were outlawed and the funds were used to reduce debt. The King thus created a monopoly or state-controlled lottery, "Lottery Nationale".
  • 1789 - In the United States, lotteries were most active during the period of adoption of the Constitution and before the establishment of effective means of local taxation and anti-lottery reforms in 1830. By 1790, America had only three banks. Therefore, lotteries were sources of money for public and private works. From 1790, lotteries funded fifty colleges, 300 schools and over 200 churches and universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia.
  • In the years 1790 to 1860, thanks to lotteries, many states funded the building of courts, prisons, hospitals, orphanages and libraries.
  • 1820 – Private lotteries operating in American are found to be corrupt. The U.S. government acknowledged that it was unable to regulate these lotteries and considered the introduction of Prohibition in the matter of numbers games. New York City was the first municipality in the United States to prohibit lotteries.
  • 1856 -Canada banned all types of lotteries. This decision affected the Catholic clergy, who for nearly 100 years were financed from lottery proceeds.
  • 1878 - Almost all U.S. states except Louisiana, prohibit the lottery.
  • 1905 – The U.S. Supreme Court decided to use police as gambling control authorities.
  • 1912 - Legalized horse race tracks in Canada are legal betting places.
  • 1917 – Creation of legalized lottery in Queensland, Australia.
  • 1930 – The Irish lottery was a great success in the U.S. and Canada.
  • 1950 – Creation of the Italian SuperEna lottery.
  • 1967 - New York state legalizes lotteries.
  • 1970 - State of New Jersey, began selling lottery tickets for 50 cents.
  • 1971 - New Jersey ticket sales, in the first year, reached a value of 73,000,000 dollars.
  • 1973 - The Olympic Lottery Corporation of Canada, received a permit to operate and sell tickets in order to fund the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
  • 1975 - Federal law was changed in the U.S. to allow the state lotteries to advertise on radio and television.
  • 1976 - The French national lottery Lotto France is formed.
  • 1978 – The States of New York and Massachusetts introduce the offline lotto. In this lottery players choose six numbers from 1 to 30.
  • 1979 - Atlantic provinces form the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation and in this way form a true nationwide lottery in Canada.
  • 1986 - The California lottery, "6-49" is launched.
  • 1988 - New York Lottery officially introduces Keno.
  • 1989 - South Dakota became the first state in the U.S. to regulate video lottery.
  • 1991 - Virginia State Lottery signed the first contract for delivery of online terminals.
  • 1992 - U.S. PowerBall lottery is created, which replaces Lotto America.
  • 1994 - Lotto UK, the National Lottery is created on February 26 and the Australia Oz Lotto follows suit on March 30.
  • 1996 - On May 23 Australia starts PowerBall lottery while on September 6 in the USA the states of Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachuset, Michigan and Virginia introduce a "multi-game" lottery.
  • 1997 - Sisal SpA in Italy introduces SuperEnalotto lottery.
  • 1998 - Multi-state Lottery Association reached record jackpots in the amount of $295.7 million in Powerball.
  • 2000 - SuperLotto Plus lottery was established.
  • 2002 - In February the SuperLottoPlus jackpot was $193 million. The name was changed in May to Mega Millions.
  • 2004 – French lottery Francaise des Jeux, Spanish Loterias y Apuestas des Estad and British Camelot form Euro Millions lottery.
  • 2009 - On the 13th of October the U.S. lotteries Powerball and Mega Millions sign an agreement for the joint sale of lottery tickets.
